ISASI 2021:

                                               A Virtual Seminar

By J. Gary DiNunno, Editor, ISASI Forum

he International Society of Air Safety Investigators held its 51st annual inter-
national accident investigation and prevention conference virtually, hosted
from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, on August 31–September 2. Although traditional
Tpreseminar tutorial sessions were not held this year, premeeting practice ses-
sions allowed individual registered participants an opportunity to test their computer
connection to the event and their sound and screen capabilities.

ISASI President Frank Del Gandio opened the seminar with a warm welcome to all
Platinum participants. He expressed regret, however, that “we cannot be together” for this
event. “As in all previous ISASI annual seminars,” he said, “over the next three days you
Air Canada will have an opportunity to hear dozens of technical presentations, Kapustin Schol-
arship essays, award recognitions, and keynote speeches that will address the sem-
Gold inar theme—‘Staying Safe and Moving Forward.’” He expressed appreciation for the
Airbus continued participation of the seminar’s corporate sponsors and exhibitors. “How this
Boeing seminar differs from the past is the way the program is presented,” he added.
Del Gandio concluded with his traditional usual words of encouragement for every-
Embraer one attending this seminar to remain engaged in the presentations, exhibits, and dis-
TSB cussions. “There will be something for everyone to learn,” he said. “There will be some-
thing for everyone to enjoy. There will be something for everyone to share with other
Silver participants—especially our student participants who might want some guidance or
Lockheed Martin direction from the air safety experts. To students and newer air safety professionals, I
urge you to take every opportunity to participate in available chat rooms. If you have a
USC question, no matter how simple or technical, there will be a seminar participant who
knows the answer or can research and answer later.
Bronze “Although we will not physically be in Montréal, you may, during the evening, take
ACPA a virtual tour to see the city or find a city attraction. You can find a Canadiens hockey
GE game on the Internet. There are also art galleries, museums, music venues, and dance
                                              performances.
Gulfstream “I want to thank Barbara Dunn and Elaine Parker for putting together a great sem-
inar that will still provide us the opportunity to learn and participate. So sit back and
ISASI 2021 Exhibitors enjoy the seminar.”
ERAU Kathy Fox, Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada chair, delivered the open-
Plane Sciences ing keynote address (see page 8). She observed that air accident investigations have
evolved with the global changes due to the COVID pandemic, the increased use of
SCSI social media, and the growing demand for instantaneous information. She outlined
the TSB’s efforts to adapt transport accident investigation to the changing world.
